One tile, every room: a whole house in a single tile

One tile, Strata 612 Matt in Earth, followed through five rooms of the same house to show how far a single choice can travel.

Strata 612 Matt, Earth

Strata 612 Matt, Earth

The hardest thing to do in a showroom is imagine. So we took one tile, Strata 612 Matt in Earth, and followed it through five rooms of the same house: lounge, alfresco, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Not a range, not a family of colourways, the same tile in every photograph.

Running one large-format tile wall to wall, and out through the sliding door in its grip finish, is one of the calmest and most expensive-looking things you can do in a home. The eye is never stopped by a threshold or a change of material, so a small house reads as bigger. Watch the tile stay the same below while everything around it shifts.

The four free design decisions

What changes from room to room is not the tile. It is the grout colour, the layout, the materials beside it and the light, and those four things are the real design decisions.

  • Grout. A matched grout melts the floor into one quiet plane, while a contrasting grout draws the layout and adds pattern.
  • Layout. The direction and setout of the same tile can stretch a room, centre a bathroom or lead the eye out to the alfresco.
  • Materials beside it. Timber, stone, joinery and soft furnishings are what give each room its character, with the floor holding everything together underneath.
  • Light. Morning kitchen light, warm bedroom lamps and bright outdoor sun all read the Earth tone differently, so one tile quietly changes mood through the day.
One tile, five rooms, and the design still lives in the grout, the layout, the materials and the light.

That is the whole idea. Choose the floor once, then let the four free decisions do the rest, and a single tile can carry an entire house without ever feeling repetitive.

This tile, and this idea, are in Kiln, our magazine. Flick through it here. When you are ready, explore the gallery, browse our tiles or book a showroom visit.
